Lichdom

Ethos

Lichdom is a world filled with fear and despair, where knowledge is power and magic is rare.

Heroes

The Seekers of Six is a society with a goal to eradicate the land of lich-control while finding the six Books of Enlightenment.  The Seekers understand that if a lich were to obtain all six books, the world would be forever enslaved. Liberation of cities and regions from their controlling liches and denizens has been an arduous task which has spawned many great legends and tales of Seeker activity.  The Seekers are literate and believe in the constructive use of knowledge and magic.  Through the destruction of the lich networks and providing common folk with exposure to the lost knowledge which the liches have horded, the Seekers hope to bring empowerment, freedom, and prosperity back to general society.

Threats, Conflicts, and Villains

Liches control regions of influence through demihumans and other creatures of intelligence.  They have enslaved rulers and forced society into pockets of city states.  Each lich had turned their dragon familiars into dracoliches so they can continue to serve their master.  The world is a place were traveling and exploring can lead to enslavement or death.  Conflicts between rival liches are common.

Nature of Magic

Magic in Lichdom is a power evoked through intricate, yet delicate combinations of elements, semantics, and language.  Magic is also scarce due to the hording of talismans and spellbooks by the liches and others who see value in keeping their knowledge secret.  Since spells higher than 3rd level are not readily available, the creation of magic items is rare.

New, Interesting, and Different

Each lich has a dracolich familiar.  While alive, the dragon familiars created offspring.  The offspring lineage has an innate subconscious link to their original ancestoral mother- the dracolich.  The dracolich keeps its master informed on activities within the lich’s controlling region through the eyes, ears, and thoughts of its lineage offspring.  Most books and scrolls, common or magical, generally use the pulp of the ragroot for paper.  Ragroot has a magical property that when mixed with salt water, activates an enzyme which prevents the material from deterioration.  This allows books and other items made with the material to last for centuries without signs of age.  Communities exist in city states or loose consolidations of villages or towns.  Since traveling outside the influence of local community protection almost certainly leads to tragedy, maps, and knowledge of distant lands generally do not exist.  Some communities ban books and literacy, while others use printed works as commodities which are of value and therefore horded.  Folklore has made each book sacred since it theoretically could be a special book with the Council’s secret messages.
