Once upon a time, the Shadow Realm was created by the will of the goddess of moon and magic. She tempted a group of ambitious elves to settle the shadow plane and grow its population and might. These were the shadow fey, and they are still the preeminent creatures of the realm of Ebon Tides. Their fey rulers are Sarastra, the Queen of Night and Magic, and her estranged husband, the Moonlit King, along with others such as Chief Gulfwyr of the Bearfolk and Queen Valda of the Golden Oak elves. Emperor Vilmos of Ghouls, the Shadow Goblin king Flibbam Barkwater, and the Queen of Teeth Phylomara also vie for the power of shadow. The magical realm is prone to bursts of shadow corruption, empowered illusions, and the wanderings of the River Styx, but fey and shadow mages find the realm congenial.
